    A dense, thorough, and insightful biography of a very controversial and enigmatic mystical figure. While a hard read, it was rewarding to learn about the socio-cultural, religious, and political contexts that set the stage for and contributed to Hallaj’s martyrdom. I found the sections regarding his direct sayings most meaningful and deep. It is a tough text to masticate and digest, especially regarding many of the facts, names, places, and political lines (since I am not a scholar of middle eastern history). Likewise the author digresses many times to elucidate (or perhaps confound the average reader) regarding legalistic, political, and familial minutiae. However, it is a landmark book, even for someone like me who is not academically trained in Sufism.
