No systematic assessment exists that justifies the extension of ethics regulations to non-experimental social science research. Instead, three studies—by MILGRAM, HUMPHREYS, and ZIMBARDO—are repeatedly cited to support such regulation, based on their use of deception and/or covertness. Challenging such regulation requires these studies' detailed re-examination. Dvora Yanow
Biography
Yanow is a policy and organizational ethnographer and interpretive methodologist whose research and teaching are shaped by an overall interest in the communication of meaning in organizational and policy settings. Currently holding the Strategic Chair in Meaning and Method in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, her research investigates state-created categories for race-ethnic identity, immigrant integration policies and citizen-making practices, policy framing, and research regulation policies and practices, on the policy side; organizational and science-technology museums, on the methodological side; and spatial and practice studies, on the organizational side. In residence for the 2010�2011 academic year, she will be preparing a book manuscript tentatively entitled ounting and the state: Category-making and integration policy in The Netherlands.
