At some point sleep had mercifully come to Phil, but his release from the terror of the evening was not a tearless one, and the sting of his cheeks as he awakens the next morning makes that quite clear. He had apparently cried himself to sleep without even realizing, and now he has to hope that his face isn’t visibly burned as a result, lest he have to sacrifice even more secrecy than he already has.
The thought leaves waking up properly feeling like an impossible task. He wants nothing more than to lie here in bed between his kids and forget the Ender King and all the emotional turmoil he’s experienced in the last two days. He hasn’t felt this depressed and helpless since the kids were missing, and he didn’t miss this feeling at all. A constant sinking feeling, like every second is another involuntary step towards certain demise, with a looming and unshakable awareness that there’s absolutely nothing he can do to make it out of this alive, especially unscathed.
Unfortunately, the stinging of his face refuses to let his body snuff out the shred of consciousness its presence is holding hostage.
