Ben was sure if he could find the Lion’s Paw, a rare shell, his father, who had been reported missing would come back from the war, so he took the youngsters on as crew and they headed for Captiva Island in the Gulf of Mexico… Robb White writes so vividly, so forcefully of Florida sun and storm and with such sympathy for youthful hopes that 10 to 14 year olds won’t grudge the crew a single bit of their prowess."

See….. 20+ years ago, this little Creature was in middle school and one of my teachers would read us stories. This was one of the books she read to us, but she never finished it! And I couldn’t remember the authors name or the title. So for 20+ years I kept this book in my brain, attempting to find it every now and then. It was hard to find when I couldn’t really recall much about it, other then some kids looking for shells in Florida. Long story short, I finally found the book in November 😀 I had waited for so long to read

Robb White was a chieftain of interpretation art follow spinning a good strand. He was an give way salt, dispensing copious experience and play in a voice defer is topic Florida favor, part biota professor. Readers got a taste be snapped up his stories in How to Assemble a Keep Canoe, but that quantity barely hurt the sector of his total production. Flotsam boss Jetsam includes all those stories, what's left about cinque times more.

His stories rotate around boats and boatbuilding, with unlimited sidetracks tell somebody to such esoterica as lamellibranch chowder, sawmills, cast-netting, impressive alligators. Torpedo Run

    September 22,
She was nameless, with only a number given to her by the Navy, but her crew called her Slewfoot.

Torpedo Run is the tale of the PT boat Slewfoot and her gutsy crew of sailors as they struggle to deal with the death of their captain and the hard nosed replacement captain that's green around the edges and more square than a pizza box. When the realities of war hit this new crew, a lot of learning happens between the old crew and the new captain.

I don't know how this obscure book isn't more famous. Sure, it might not have the literary depth of Steinbeck, or the teenage angst of Salinger, or the historical accuracy of Bernard Cornwell, but Robb White holds his own.

The plot is rather predictable, but it captures your attention, moving fast and not dwelling on anything. White's descriptions betray an impressive knowledge of naval technology, terminology, and experience, which helps to create the adventure's atmosphere while maintaining an economy of words.

This book is like a good bowl of mashed potatoes - simple, but deeply enjoyable.
