She began writing fiction in the early s and is about to publish her fourteenth book of fiction. According to the Sri Lankan critic Tissa Jayatilaka, Wijenaike is “capable of plumbing the sombre depths of human experience and exploring the dark passions lurking within us” (Jayatilaka ). In Giraya, a novel published in , a recently married young woman, Kamini, tells of her hardships in an old-fashioned manor-house, ruled by an authoritarian mother-in-law. Coming from a poorer background, Kamini feels ostracised in the wealthy family, and gradually fails in her attempts to belong in her new home.
