Provincetown beloved artist Ilona Royce-Smithkin turns 100
PROVINCETOWN — Ilona Royce-Smithkin has been a mainstay and loved, cherished artist in Provincetown for more than 60 years. She turned 100 years old on Friday, March 27. About 20 people gathered on the beach outside her Commercial Street apartment to sing her a socially distanced happy birthday. Born in Poland in March 1920, Royce-Smithkin moved with her family to Germany when she was still an infant. Royce-Smithkin studied at the Reimann School of Art and Design in Berlin and later the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Belgium. In 1938, she moved to New York City, where she studied with Robert Brackman at the Art Students League. She was introduced to Provincetown at the suggestion of a travel agent when she told her she was looking for a place to escape that had swimming, she didn't need a car and she could be independent. She fell in love.
